Let’s talk about leather
Hope that you have 3 minutes to read some our advises we wanted to give you before going to buy a new bag or a pair of shoes.
Did you know that there are several methods of leather tanning process? We are going to discuss two of them, since they are the most used in the industry.
First of all, you need to know that the reason of tanning leather is to change permanently the protein structure of skin in order to improve durability and decrease the tendency to decompose.
The tanning of the skin also allows us to dye it in colour. After all the process, the leather is ready to be used in the production of bags, shoes, accessories and other products.
Vegetable tanned leather
This method is known as the oldest one and, for many centuries, it was the main tanning method. It consists of using extracts of trees and plants such as mimosa, chestnut, oak, spruce bark, quebracho, olive leaves, rhubarb roots among others.
We need to say that vegetable tanning is a long process, which involves soaking hides in large baths or drums of concentrated tannins during several weeks or even months. As a result after all this involved process we have the vegetable tanned leather with the following characteristics such as: a natural feel, a flexible but rigid structure at the same time, eco-friendly tanning process.

In Artém Atelier we use this kind of leather partially or entirely for bags, belts, leather accessories, shoes and even for our home decor collection to get a firm structure.
Some of our articles are created using this type of leather in combination with chrome tanned leather, which we explain below.
Chrome tanned leather
Surely you have in your closet a bag, some shoes or gloves made of a thin, elastic and flexible leather. Well in professional slang this leather is called chrome tanned leather.
As its name tells us chrome tanning using a chemical called Chromium(III) sulfate to process the leather. This method has been known since 1858, as tanneries were eager to find a faster and cheaper way to treat the skin.
Chemicals, acids and salts are used for the chrome tanning process in order to dye the hide. It takes less time and less expense to prepare the leather, that is why this method is more popular.
Here are some of the characteristics of chrome tanned leather: resistance to water, stains, and heat, availability in a huge range of colours, it is thin, soft and elastic and the colour of the leather is maintained for almost the entire life of the product.
